Hoi An is a charming town in Central Vietnam… with the Ancient Town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I visited Hoi An in 2007, and back then it was as charming and quaint as it is today. But nowadays, Hoi An is packed with plenty more tourists, especially in the Ancient Town.
And for such a small town, there are lots of places to eat and drink. Yet, sometimes it can be challenging to find a seat at your “must do” Hoi An restaurants.
Plus, if you’re accommodation is outside of the Hoi An Old Town like ours was… there are some restaurants we found that are great to try.
So if you want to have some food and drinks without the hustle and bustle… keep reading to discover where to eat outside of Hoi An Ancient Town.
But before we get into it, here’s a rough map showing the Ancient Town area…
So in this blog, the 7 Hoi An Restaurants will be outside of the red circle area. And boy, did we find some gems!
Hoi An Burgers Plus
Address: 22 Phan Boi Chau Street
Just outside the main craziness of Hoi An Ancient Town, is a great little place called Hoi An Burgers Plus. To us, it had a homely type feel… and when we got here, we received great service from the get go.
We ordered burger combos, which included fries and a beer. The prices for food and drinks are cheap even without the combos.
Sorry, I’d already eaten some of the chips before the pic as I was getting HANGRY… LOL!
And the best part was, the food was tasty! Definitely give it a go for great food, drinks, ambience and service.
Minh Hien Vegetarian Restaurant
Address: 50 Tran Cao Van Street
We went to Minh Hien many times during our stay in Hoi An. Once we walked into the restaurant we received great service and smiles.
We also liked the décor and interior, with all the books lined up against the walls. The wooden tables had glass tops… and between those were notes from customers or promotional material.
They also had tourist information and tours, which seemed like reasonable prices.
The menu is extensive, and one of our favorites was the Bun Hue. Overall the food is exceptional, as is the service. Minh Hien is a MUST!
Greek Souvlaki
Address: 07 Thai Phien Street
No trying to guess what gets served here, the name says it all. Yet, when we saw it, there was a cart outside like a Vietnamese street food stall!
The restaurant is almost a hole in the wall, yet it does have a few seats outside too.
We had vegetarian souvlakis, and the ingredients tasted fresh. It’s worth trying if you’re in the area.
So, the more popular option is Mix in the Hoi An Ancient Town, which gets really busy. Yet, in peak times finding a seat is impossible, unless you want to wait minimum 30 minutes.
However, the best souvlaki we’ve had in Vietnam was in Nha Trang. The place was called Pita… and the souvlakis were a decent size, packed full of delicious ingredients. Plus, the pita bread was so tasty.
Dingo Deli
Address: 277 Cua Dai Road
The owner of Dingo Deli is Canadian Australian… and after having heard many recommendations to try here, that’s what we did!
Dingo Deli has breads, pastries, all day breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and international mains.
Yet, if you’re after a decent deli or cheese platter with generous portions, then Dingo Deli is a must try…
It’s a comfy restaurant and decked out well. While prices are higher than some restaurants, the quality and value is worth it.
The Kebab Shack
Address: 38B Thai Phien Cam Pho Street
The Kebab Shack is not what you think it is based on the name alone. It’s part owned by an Englishman, so the main food is English breakfasts, fast food and roast dinners. And on top of that there’s kebabs too!
Yet, the kebabs weren’t like the ones we’d had before. Check it out…
The shape and serving was different to other kebabs we had, especially being from Melbourne. Yet, the kebabs were tasty and they adapted to make vegetarian versions too.
So when we wanted a change from Vietnamese food, it was a good place to go. Reasonable prices for Western food and cheap drinks!
The Deck House
Address: Somewhere on An Bang Beach
Now, to get to The Deck House there is no street number. This makes it a little confusing to find on a first visit.
Yet, what we did was head straight down Hai Ba Trung Street towards Hoi An Beach… in particular the An Bang beach area. Then there were a few restaurants, and areas to park motorbikes and vehicles.
Plus, we couldn’t go further on our motorbike. So that’s where we stopped and parked our motorbike.
Once here, as we were facing the beachfront, we then turned to go left. We actually past several bars and restaurants along the way. Yet, we saw The Deck House and it looked really cool and funky.
So here’s where we stopped to have a few beers…
And the views of beautiful An Bang beach were breathtaking.
Vi Café
Address: 113 Tran Hung Dao Street
We found Vi Café after walking in stifling heat, and then we heard some people yelling out “Hello! Cold beer!”
Paul and I looked at each other as cold beer sounded bloody awesome to us! Then, we saw a couple of people waving at us, yelling out “Hello, we have cold beer.”
What the heck, so we went over to Vi Café. So the first time we went there and tried the Bia Hoi, which was cold and refreshing.
We did try the food here once, yet compared to other places we’d been it was just OK.
We mainly went to Vi Café to have drinks, before heading out to enjoy the Hoi An nightlife. The staff here are friendly, funny and the beers were cold.
So there are some Hoi An restaurants you should try, that are outside the Old Town area.
Sometimes getting out of the main touristy area is where you’ll find some great places. And that’s exactly what happened to us. Plus, sometimes in the main tourist areas they trap you with high prices and mediocre food.
So what bars or restaurants have you been to outside Hoi An Ancient Town that you would recommend?
