Paul and I left everything behind in Australia many years ago to live our dreams. And years later we’re still living our dreams, traveling around the world whenever we want.
While it was like a last minute decision to leave home, we haven’t looked back and have no regrets taking the plunge.
Yet, whether you’re working for yourself or someone else, there’s one critical thing you MUST do…
And that is to take time out to travel.
So that doesn’t mean you have to go on a 6 week round the world vacation… as not everyone has that time or budget for it.
And if you’re travel bloggers like us, you need to take time out from that too, otherwise you’ll burn out.
So in this blog, we’ll share 3 reasons why travel is important.
1. You Appreciate What You Have
Whether you’re rich or watching your dollars like a hawk, there’s no excuse why you can’t travel. Traveling doesn’t mean you have to go overseas for a vacation. You do what you can with what you have.
Yet, when you travel it makes you stop and smell the roses, and appreciate what you have.
On our travels we’ve had conversations with locals, who had everything taken away from them including their family in wars… through to workers who earn USD $8 a MONTH.
So imagine living on $8 a month… If Paul and I were back in Australia, this would be near to impossible.
In a world where many people take things for granted… I will never forget when we were in Nha Trang, Vietnam.
One day we saw a few kids, who were playing with a football (that’s soccer for folk like us). The ball came hurtling our way and Paul grabbed it. Then he spun the ball on his finger, like with a basketball.
You should’ve seen the look on the kids faces… it was priceless. They were mesmerized, and couldn’t believe what they were seeing. To us, this was normal.
Then as Paul gave the ball back to the children, they gave it back to him… motioning for him to do it again! We’ve even seen kids play with nothing except for cardboard boxes that were left out on the streets.
There’ve been many situations where we’ve stopped to think… we’re grateful for the roof over our heads, our new clothes, and clean drinking water… Even things like our iPhones, being able to fly on a plane, having a proper bed to sleep on, and so on.
2. You Can Tantalize Your Tastebuds With New Food And Drinks
Paul and I love to cook, yet when we’re on our travels it’s exciting to try new cuisines. Plus, it’s an opportunity for us to put the tools down, and relax while someone else cooks for us both!
Even if you’re a budget traveler, make sure you save some money to splurge out on either luxurious meals for yourself… Or even to eat out several times throughout your trip, as it could be a highlight of your travels.
And if you’re really tight on the travel budget… going into supermarkets, delicatessens, even bakeries in new places can make your mouth water. These places will most likely have a range of food and drinks you won’t have back at home.
For example, in Melbourne Australia… we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to international cuisine. And there are a several places where we can get a delicious variety of cheeses. Yet, due to certain rules, numerous cheeses cannot be imported into Australia.
So going to somewhere like France is a cheese lovers haven. From simple cow’s milk cheeses, to the soft melt in your mouth cheeses… through to the robust aged cheddars and to the stinkiest blue cheeses… that’s what we live for. LOL!
So what are your food and drink favorites now? What would you dream of trying on your travels. Write it down, get photos of it, and picture yourself having it… Make it happen!
3. You Can Get A Rush By Experiencing Something New
Have you ever had that feeling when you want to do something new, but don’t have the courage to do it?
Yet, what I’ve found is that when I’m in a different place, I get a rush because I’m there generally for a short time. So I want to make the most of the time I have. That’s what gives me a kick up the butt to go do something new.
It’s funny that having been born and bred in Australia, we’ve met tourists who’ve seen more of our hometown than what we have! So you see what we mean?
A great example is that I’m scared of BIG heights. So when I was in Austria, I had the opportunity to do paragliding in Tyrol. OK, while the height is several hundred meters, that maybe nothing for a lot of you!
But for me, I was shitting myself! Yet, after seeing how beautiful Austria was… it was time for me to see its beauty from a bird’s eye perspective. And OMG… it was one of the best things I’ve done on my travels.
It gave me a rush, a sense of relief, pride, and I was grinning from ear to ear!
So go out there and do something new. Live on the edge, otherwise you’re taking up too much room… LOL!
So they were just 3 reasons why travel is important. Set your budget, work out where you could go, and what you want to do. If you need help, reach out to us.
