Paul and I were staying in West Lake Hanoi, and after eating a lot of Vietnamese food… sometimes craving a different cuisine happens!
So one day I went out for a wander to see what I could find, but I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted. Yet, I didn’t have to walk far before this Hanoi restaurant stood out to me…
It’s called Taco Non La, and I hadn’t had Mexican for a long time. So now was a good time to give it a try, even though it was in Vietnam!
Inside Taco Non La
Once I walked in I noticed that it was a small place, yet it was clean. I was the only customer in there at the time.
There was a big board with the menu behind where the cook had his ingredients. There was a meat menu and a separate vegetarian menu, as well as extras and chips.
Tacos started from 35,000 VND (about USD $1.50), and burritos from 79,000 VND to give you an idea of price. There were many other items such as quesadillas, nachos, salads and more.
To order, I had to go up to the counter. And in a wooden box there were several compartments with pieces of paper in each section. Then, I decided I wanted tacos, so I got a piece of paper and selected the ingredients that I wanted in my taco.
There are separate order menus for meat and vegetarian / vegan. Once that was done I paid, and they take credit card too.
Here’s a sample of the vegetarian / vegan tacos order form…
The Taco Non La Taste Test
Now, it really was Mexican fast food. Because within minutes my tacos were ready. I guess I was the only person there at the time though.
I ordered a black bean vegetarian taco and a mushroom taco. There was an apple salsa to give it a more crunchy texture.
The taco shells were crispy and flavoursome.
They were packed full of filling, which was great! So whenever I took a mouthful ingredients spilled out from the sides onto my plate, the table or roll off onto floor… more likely it was my messy eating! LOL!
The juices from the ingredients would run down my hands too. So be prepared for a little mess!
I did ask for cheese instead of sour cream, but got sour cream instead. So that was a negative for me.
My favorite of the two was the mushroom taco… delicious flavor just from the mushrooms!
For me, 2 tacos hit the spot at the time. Yet if it was Paul he’d have to double the quantity I think.
Also, on Thursdays they have a deal of buy 1 taco get 1 free, which is a great deal.
As it’s a small Mexican restaurant, and the cooking station is open to the sitting area… So you will have the Mexican food smell in your clothes as you leave!
Otherwise I would recommend this Mexican Fast Food restaurant, and give it a try if you’re in the area.
You can find Taco Non La at 32 To Ngoc Van in Tay Ho, Hanoi.
