Paul and I were staying in an apartment in Da Nang in the My An area.
I discovered that there was a local market about 1km away.
I’d been to a few markets in DaNang before, with varying levels of experiences!
Yet, in this blog post I’ll take you through where to go in Da Nang for a real local market, without the tourist traps.
Plus, I’ll show you the big grocery shop that I did. You’ll find out how ridiculous it was. Read on to see what I mean…
I set off for Chợ Bắc Mỹ An (Bac My An Market) on a beautiful sunny Saturday. I decided to get some fresh air and exercise, so I walked there.
I got to the market around 7:45am.
One of the Entrances to the Market…
With the route I took, the start of the market was at the alley called, My Da Dong 1…
Thee were lots of little food and drinks stalls set up… including bahn mi, juices, smoothies, sticky rice, and noodles…
This local Vietnamese market is open air, yet with many stalls undercover.
There’s plenty of parking around and in the market too…
As I wandered around outside, I could see all the vibrant coloured fresh fruit and vegetables. There were lots of ladies and some men, sitting by the side of the roads, selling their produce…
There was a tonne of stuff being sold at the market including meat, fresh hand made tofu, and seafood. Be prepared to get your feet wet if you visit the seafood sections!
You could also buy clothes, shoes, accessories, homewares, personal care items, luggage, packaged foods, and heaps more!
There’s also a big undercover area in the Market…
In the center of this Da Nang market is a large undercover area. And here, there’s even more produce sold…
Plus, there’s lots of little food and drink stalls if you need to fill your belly…
Towards the end of my visit to Bac My An Market, I saw this lady. She was happy to pose for me, and show off her Da Nang street food…
I bought one for just 5,000 VND (about USD $0.20).
I’d had these big puffy, deep fried breads before. And this lady’s was good, with the sesame seeds adding lots of flavor. Just so you know, for this one… there’s nothing inside except air!
I’ve had others before where inside the balls are peanuts and maybe sugar.
Although not the healthiest snack, but sometimes you have to try these things!
So I did end up doing a big grocery shop…
All of this cost a ridiculous 217,000 VND (about USD $9.30). And back at home in Australia… I’d get just over 1kg of butternut pumpkin for that price!
In my time there at this cute little Vietnamese market, it seemed to me there was hardly a tourist.
And just so you know… most of them don’t speak English or any other foreign language. Part of the fun was trying to communicate what I was looking to buy!
If you get a chance, I highly recommend you visit a market like this one. I had visited both Con Market and Han Market. But to me, they didn’t have the charm of Chợ Bắc Mỹ An.
Yet, I guess everyone’s different!
So get out there, explore, and have fun!
