It can be difficult to find the best dumplings in Melbourne Chinatown… especially as there are a lot of places to choose from! And, we’re just talking about Chinatown… let alone the other masses of dumpling places in the Melbourne CBD and beyond.

Thankfully we have our favorite places. And, undoubtedly, when we come back to beloved Melbourne… we often put on a bit more weight than we’d like!

Yep, we blame it on Melbourne’s abundance of great eateries… instead of our lack of self-control. Ha ha ha!

So, needless to say, unlike other places around the world… you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to delicious dumplings. From cheap and cheerful to fine dining dumplings, there are plenty of places to devour them in Melbourne.

Foodies will be in gastronome heaven.

Plus, if you’re vegetarian you don’t need to worry… as there are many places that have vegetarian dumplings too.

Yet, beware, there are the not so tasty dumplings too! So, in this updated We Drink Eat Travel Blog Post… we’ll share with you, where to get the best dumplings in Melbourne specifically in Chinatown.

Got a Craving for Dumplings?

OK, so one of the foods we MUST have when returning to Melbourne are… DUMPLINGS. There are no hesitations. And, the great thing is about Melbourne is this… even if you’re not in Chinatown you can get awesome dumplings throughout.

Yet, we’re sure many of you fellow travelers who read this… will be in the Melbourne CBD area.

As I said earlier, there’s a variety of places to choose from in Melbourne… even in Chinatown itself. From basic places to those where it will take you on a nostalgic journey.

There are also dumpling restaurants in Melbourne, that get your mouth watering… as you can see them behind the window, making dumplings at a blazing speed.

Yeah, OK, I’ve made dumplings at “home” before like these…

And, it took me much longer than what these other expert cooks can do! Hey, when you’re on the road traveling and have no access to dumplings… like when we were in a remote area of Croatia, it’s a way to satisfy cravings.Yet, in Chinatown Melbourne, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

So Many Dumplings in Chinatown Melbourne

Now, as I mentioned earlier, with so many places to gorge on dumplings… it can be hard to choose.

Some of the Chinese restaurants in Melbourne have been serving delicious dumplings for over 50 years! And, yes, you can get them oftentimes during yum cha… which we also LOVE!

OMG, yum cha is another entire travel blog on its own. If you’ve never experienced yum cha then from our perspective… you are missing out.

Now, the dumpling restaurant in Melbourne that we’ll be revealing… is maybe a place that will not appeal to everyone. So, before we get onto that, we’ll make a mention for this place.

And yes… it is a complete opposite feel and price point to the place we choose when going back to Melbourne.

So, if you’re after a place with a more “upmarket” feel and ambiance… then you may like to head on over to Hu Tong Dumpling Bar.

Now, in Melbourne they have a couple of different outlets. Yet, for those of you in Melbourne CBD… you can try their dumplings without having to travel further out.

So, the Hu Tong Dumpling Bar claim that, All our dumplings are freshly made in the house from the Chinese traditional recipe.”

Woah, they’ve got you hooked already, right?

With their exposed brick interior, pristine white tablecloths, warm oriental lanterns, decorative wood furniture, and an intimate environment… it sure is a place that you’d take a date or for a more special occasion.

Yet, it’s not a restaurant in Chinatown Melbourne… if you’re after cheap and cheerful dumplings.

On average, about 4 dumplings at Hu Tong Dumpling Bar will cost about $12.80 AUD. So, that’s about $9.50 USD, 8.10 Euros, 7 GBP or 65 CNY. Remember, that’s FOUR dumplings. Keep that in mind for when you keep reading our travel blog about… the best dumplings in Melbourne.

Yet, while this may be a great experience for some travelers and tourists, we always head on over to this place…

The Best Dumplings in Melbourne Chinatown – From Our View

Now, when we come back to Melbourne, Australia… there’s always one restaurant we MUST go back to.

And, I’m not ashamed to say that, “I Love Dumplings.” So, where do we go to fill our bellies with the tasty, best dumplings in Chinatown Melbourne?

The restaurant I’m talking about is Shanghai Village.

You can find this restaurant at 112 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne… in the heart of Chinatown.

This restaurant has multiple levels. And yes, it does get so busy that depending on what time you go… you may have to wait in line. Now, a warning to you tourists, it’s not great lining up if you’re there in Melbourne’s winter months!

It’s not just a restaurant dedicated to dumplings. There’s a big menu of other Chinese dishes that you can try, and yes… many of the dishes are inexpensive. Yet, for us, we ONLY go to Shanghai Village for dumplings.

No, it’s not one of those restaurants… where you can see the cooks skilfully making the dumplings in the restaurant behind a window. Plus, if you want opulence and quietness… it’s not the place to go. And, it sure is not a place to go for a romantic date night!

It’s cheap, cheerful and can get noisy, as many big groups go there too.
